CS Lewis famously stated "of all bad men, righteous bad men are the worst"
lying in bed tonight, I think of Lewis' statement and realize, again, just how true that is.
I suppose it's true of all men that there is a natural tendency to do stupid things, selfishly. Nephi said of himself "Oh wretched man that I am, my heart sorroweth... My soul grieveth because if my iniquities. I am encompassed about because of the temptations and the sins which do so easily beset me. And when I desire to rejoice my heart groans because of my sins" (2Ne 4:17-19)
I think of the third verse from the hymn "Do What Is Right", it is a verse that has recently become very precious to me.
"Do what is right,
be faithful and fearless,
onward press onward,
The goal is in sight.
Eyes that are wet now, will be tearless.
blessings await you, do what is right
Do what is right let the consequences follow,
Battle for freedom in spirit and might;
and with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow,
God will protect you, then do what is right."
In the end, I believe this is happiness- no matter how long and hard the road,do what is right. Lord knows we need more good men... and women. At least ones who can account for their wretchedness and work meekly towards achieving a measure of perfection in life.
